    This course will serve to continue to train mature students in the art and practice of spiritual accompaniment. The content and format provide an opportunity for an expanded knowledge and experience of the ministry through the practice of supervised spiritual direction. Through lectures, class discussions, spiritual exercises, and the supervised practice of spiritual direction, students will not only learn critical skills for the practice, but also benefit from the hands-on supervision of their practice. Students will meet with a minimum of 3 directees outside of class time, for supervised spiritual direction. Through this experience, both students and supervisor(s) will continue to learn about the persons, process and practice of guiding fellow pilgrims deeper in love, faith and hope in Christ. Students are required, themselves, to be in regular monthly spiritual direction.

  • SF008W20: Methodologies of Spiritual Direction

    This course is intended for mature students who have discerned a call to training in the art and practice of spiritual direction, whether that will be, in a lay or professional capacity. This course introduces students to 4 major streams of spirituality and practice of spiritual companionship, which have historical, as well as, current significance in the field of spiritual direction. Students will consider both readings and teaching on each of these movements/methodologies and reflect upon the resonance to their own practice, as well as, the areas which draw them further into a particular area or methodology presented. Methodologies include Evangelical Spirituality and Spiritual Direction, Franciscan Spirituality and Spiritual Direction, Thomas Merton Spirituality and Spiritual Direction, and Ignatian Spirituality and Spiritual Direction.
    This course utilizes selected readings, lectures, class discussions, guided experiences, and sharing.

  • SF009S20H: Issues in Spiritual Direction

    Residency: April 3-5, 2020
    Location: Queen of the Apostles

    There are a number of important and recurring issues that arise for the contemporary spiritual director:  grief and depression, personality and spirituality styles, the meaning of dreams and the role of the unconscious, sex-related issues, retreat ministry, genograms, direction with people of other traditions or faiths, setting up a spiritual direction practice, recognizing basic pathologies, partnering and referring, ethics, professionalism, peer supervision, etc. While directors need to engage in life-long education, basic orientation and some discussion on some particular issues will help prepare the director when and if they arise. Personality, dreams, sexual issues, grief and depression, retreats and professionalism are the expected topics for 2020.

The first course – Introduction to Spiritual Formation – gave us high quality instruction that incorporated visuals, art, music, spiritual direction exercises as well as teaching that reflected a scholarly breadth of understanding and insight into both historical and current Christianity. The Individual Retreat is a process over a period of days where you interact with scripture, learn ways of praying, and develop that kind of personal connection with God. So it’s a process of developing our soul-connection—spirit-connection—with God, so that we are seeing God’s work in daily life, and that we are creating space for God in the crush of the normal things that happen in our daily lives. So that is one of the formation processes that an organization like Emmaus can facilitate or help with in churches—is to run retreats like that, that help people get into that mindset.
