Today I turn to the Payer of Examen, a prayer that helps me review my prayer and experience of God over this past week.
Below, you will find some reminders about entering into a time of examen.
1. Settle into prayer with thanksgiving.
I place myself in the presence of God, who is father and mother to us, so much more than we can imagine. I settle into His presence and thank Him for accompanying me on my journey.
2. Ask for what you seek.
I ask for the guidance of the Spirit to help me get in touch with my experience of the week. I ask for the ability to recognize, to sense—how the Spirit is leading me through this retreat experience.
3. Reflect on your Experiences of the Week.
…I remember moments of the week…
…I remember resisting God on Day…
…the Spirit was clearly with me on Day…
Respond To God
I dialogue with God who is with us and loves us profoundly in the midst of the reality of my life and experience of the retreat. I talk over with God how I am being called now.

Journal your experience and consider what you may bring to your spiritual director.
You have finished 5 weeks of intentionally praying with the Scriptures.
We hope that you have been able to receive the grace that God has offered you on this journey. For some of you, this has been a tiring, yet rewarding experience. For others, this has been a time of small but significant steps toward the Heart of God. And for others, this has been only the beginning.
So, what’s next?
- For some, seeking out a “spiritual friend” with whom to share your experience of God—will be the next step.
- For others, you may desire to continue the relationship with your spiritual director. The spiritual directors with whom you met during this retreat are trained, and have answered a vocational call to this ministry. So, your director will charge a fee, one that will vary usually depending on their level of experience. Talk this over with your spiritual director.
- To find a Spiritual Director, go to the Emmaus Formation Centre website: www.emmausformation.ca
One way of continuing to meet with a spiritual director is to take the journey of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, upon which the RDL is based. These exercises are offered only by those directors who have done the journey themselves, and have been trained in that area. - There are also Franciscan Spiritual Exercises, focusing on St. Francis and his own journey as he gave up all he owned and dwelt with God’s creation, spreading the Gospel as he went.
Please inquire at info@emmausformation.ca for more information. - Spiritual reading is a useful and important accompaniment to the journey. Modern authors such as David Benner, Henri Nouwen, John Ortberg, Richard Foster and Thomas Merton are among many who can enrich your journey as you see the journey through their eyes.
- If you are interested in a group spiritual direction experience, please contact Sandy Broadus for more information at info@emmausformation.ca Groups meet monthly—as a safe place to share your spiritual journey with others, for the purpose of being with one another, and for one another in prayer.
Blessings to each and every one of you.
