It is good to enter into the time of meditative prayer with a spirit of quiet and relaxation. Let the mystery of God be near you, and let yourself be open to God’s gift of the Spirit.
Matthew 5:1-11 Sermon on the Mount
Guide
Presence: Take two deep breaths. God is with me, but more, God is within me, giving me existence. God is both my creator and sustainer. Grace upon grace.
Read Matthew 5:1-11 Read the Scripture below twice, one silently and once aloud, noticing which words or phrases strike you as you read. With each reading, ask God, “Why these words? What situation or area in my life are you addressing, God?” Take that situation or area to prayer, waiting for God’s invitation to know, understand, change,
or to consider.
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down.
His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely
say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
